London: Manchester United's crisis deepened on Sunday after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League, with manager Michael Carrick's decision to drop captain Bruno Fernandes failing to deliver the desired result.
Liverpool also secured a 2-0 win over Brighton at Anfield, ending the south-coast side's unbeaten run since August. Newcastle United beat Crystal Palace 2-0, while Hull City and Brentford drew 1-1. Leeds United were scheduled to visit Sunderland later.
United's winless run extended to eight games in all competitions following the defeat, which came four days after a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League. Fernandes had criticised Carrick's tactics in comments to the media after that match.
The Portugal international was left out against Bournemouth in what Carrick described as a "pure football" decision and did not come off the bench.
Bournemouth took advantage of United's defensive mistakes, with Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scoring to secure the visitors' victory.
The result left United 16th in the 20-team Premier League table and increased the pressure on Carrick, who signed a permanent deal as manager barely five months ago after leading the team back into the Champions League during a short-term spell in the second half of last season.
Frustrated United supporters chanted against Jason Wilcox, the club's director of football, who had recently faced criticism from defender Lisandro Martinez. Fans also directed their anger at the Glazer family, the club's majority owners.
"It hurts an awful lot to see us going through this at this moment in time," Carrick said.
United have won only one of their eight league games this season, beating promoted Ipswich at home on 30 August.
"It's nowhere near good enough," defender Harry Maguire said. "Something needs to change."
Carrick was applauded by some supporters as he walked around the pitch with his team after the final whistle, while jeers appeared to be directed at the players as he entered the tunnel.
"It wasn't a farewell from me," Carrick said. "What it looks like, what is next — I really don't know. But I'll always do what's best for this football club."
Brighton's previous defeat had also come on 30 August. The team had since put together an impressive unbeaten run that included two 5-0 wins and a 3-0 victory over Arsenal.
That run ended at Anfield, where Liverpool scored twice within four minutes midway through the first half.
Pascal Gross deflected Florian Wirtz's shot into his own net before Alexander Isak turned in a cross from Bradley Barcola to make it 2-0.
Newcastle United claimed a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace, with William Osula and Harvey Barnes scoring in the second half.
Hull City and Brentford drew 1-1, while Leeds United were due to face Sunderland later on Sunday.
